COMING HOME
Victor Ekpuk is a Nigerian-born contemporary artist based in Washington, DC.
His form of art came to prominence with his with his drawings and paintings which has evolved to embrace a wider spectrum of meaning that is rooted in African and global contemporary art discourses.
Guided by the aesthetic philosophy and exploration of Nsibidi and uli “traditional” graphics and writing systems in Nigeria, where sign systems are used to convey ideas, Ekpuk re-imagines graphic symbols from diverse cultures to form a personal style of mark making that results in the interplay of art and writing.
He is a graduate of Fine Art from the prestigious Obafemi Awowolo University, Ife, Nigeria in 1989, where he first explored the aesthetic philosophies of Nsibidi.
Victor's style draws upon a wider spectrum of meaning that is rooted in Africa and reflects his experiences as a global artist. “The subject matter of my work deals with the human condition explained through themes that are both universal and specific: family, gender, politics, culture and Identity” -Victor Ekpuk
Victor will be exhibiting in Lagos, Nigeria from April 9, 2016 at the Renault Place, 43B, Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island till April 30, 2016. This is not his first exhibition at home, he has also exhibited in various parts of the world such as London, USA, The Netherlands and South Africa.
